Italians don't miss plastic bags

Conad, one of the biggest Italian supermarket chain, has recently conducted a customer satisfaction survey regarding the available alternative to plastic grocery bags, totally banned in Italy since 2011.
Results are unquestionable: 8 out of 10 customers declared that they would not go back to the old plastic bags system. One out of 3 customer regularly reuses biodegradable and compostable plastic bags several times for shopping.
Conad started replacing plastic bags in 2010, one year before the official plastic bags ban started, and in 2014 has distributed 250 millions biodegradable and compostable Mater-Bi shopping bags , corresponding to 4,300 tons of weight. Other available alternatives in Conad supermarkets are thick and reusable bags made of recycled plastic, cotton and paper.
“We treat shopping bags exactly as our own brands products, taking care of them with the same attention and dedication that we use for food and non-food products distributed with our brand- explained Alberto Moretti, Conad Marketing Director- In 2014 we released 516 millions of sales receipts together with 250 millions of biodegradable and compostable Mater-Bi shopping bags, which means that more than 50% of our customers bring their own reusable or compostable shopping bags."
